Corry, PA
The Corry JV volleyball team swept the Cochranton Cardinals in two straight sets (25-21 and 25-20) to improve their record to 3-0 on the season. Cochranton had a very well coached team and did a decent job of passing the ball, but Corry had more offensive weapons, better serving, and was not to be stopped.
In the first set, Corry got out to a 14-4 lead early by siding out quickly, serving tough, and running an effective offense. Corry struggled to pass the ball late in the set, and allowed Cochranton to come back, but it was too little and too late for Cochranton. Middle hitter Liv Swan contributed three serving aces and outside hitter, Lauren Brundage had 5 kills in the set.
In the second set, the two teams played evenly, trading points until serving runs by Outside hitter Ava West, and Defensive Specialist Jordyn Watrous enabled Corry to pull ahead for the win. West also contributed seven kills in set two, hitting very effectively.
"Everyone had a chance to play and contribute." JV Coach Mark Brenner said. "I thought Cochranton had good ball control, and that made for lots of rallies and intense play, but our offense and serving were the difference makers."
Notable play included lots of kills from our outside hitters Brundage and West, and an exceptional night of passing for defensive specialist and Liberos Mikayla Comitz and Watrous.
Corry serving leaders were Swan who tallied six service points, three of them where aces, West had six service points with an ace) and Watrous had six service points. Hitting leaders were West with nine kills, Brundage had five kills, and right side hitter Naomi Brown accumulated four kills. Defensively, Watrous led with 12 digs, followed by West and Comitz with five digs apiece. Brown had 15 assists and Maci Kemp had nine.
The JV team will compete at the FLB JV Tournament on Saturday before heading to Maplewood on Tuesday. DeeJ Experience will have coverage of the match at the Woodshed Tuesday night against the Tigers. JV Opening serve is at 6:00 PM with varsity action to follow. Watch all the action live at www.deejexperience.com
