Corry Volleyball JV Coach
Corry JV volleyball won their match on the road at Fairview on Tuesday night. The Tigers team was athletic and competitive, but did not have enough to withstand the Beavers as Corry swept Fairview in two straight sets 25-15 and 25-21.
It was an exceptional night for both teams passing the ball, and both teams were fairly even in most of the stats. The one area where Corry was clearly better was being able to kill the ball, 21 kills by Corry in the match compared to 13 for Fairview. In this match, Corry hitters, led by outstanding play from MH Rylee Nickerson (7 kills on 13 attempts with no errors), were the difference makers.
The first set was a back and forth affair through the first few servers on both teams. With the score tied 5-5, Corry began to open up a substantial 16-8 lead, based in part on excellent serving from S Haley Mumau, who went on a little run of four service points including two aces. There was spirited play throughout the rest of the set, but Corry came out the victor.
In the second set, Corry built a lead and then relinquished most of it mid way through the set, getting aced three times in a row by a Fairview player who perfected the art of short serves. This set was closer in score, but the end result was the same. Corry hitters killed the ball more efficiently than their opponents and finished the set with a win.
Throughout the match Corry servers kept the pressure on, with a combined 94% serving percentage and six aces. Serving leaders were Libero/DS Ali Yetzer (10 service points, 3 aces), and Mumau (5 service points, 1 ace). Nickerson had a very good night as mentioned previously, leading the team with 7 kills, and connecting well with the setter. 5 other players notched kills, showing the depth at that skill. Defensively Yetzer led the team with 10 digs, followed by RH Shawntel Dyne with 7 digs. Also defensively, OH Regan Kemp had 2 blocks. Mumau had 21 assists.
The Corry JV team improves to 8-1 on the year and will head back to the Beaver Dam on Thursday night to battle the lady Lakers of Mercyhurst Prep. JV opening serve is scheduled for 6:00 PM and it is also Charity Night. Be looking for more information coming on charity night in the coming days.
