Waterford, PA- The Corry volleyball team had one of its better matches at the best time of the year. The lady Beavers were hitting on all cylinders early and often in their sweep of the Cathedral Prep ramblers, dominating the first set and continued with solid wins in the second and third set. Corry won the matches 25-9, 25-16, and 25-14 to win the District 10 championship!
Corry scored the first point of the first set on a double block by freshman Ava West and junior Rylee Nickerson. Junior Grace Allen broke an early 2-2 tie with three kills and then an ace made the early score 7-3. Fellow junior outside hitter, Regan Kemp, had two kills and the lead grew to 11-4. Middle hitter Rylee Nickerson had two consecutive kills off sets by junior setter Haley Mumau forcing Cathedral Prep into their first time out with Corry leading 15-5. The scoring onslaught continued with two kills by Nickerson, Kemp, and a spike by Ava West. Senior setter Ava Hallberg continued the hot start with a set to Grace Allen and the first set was over at 25-9.
In the second set Grace Allen continued her scoring with three early kills to help the lady beavers jump out to a 6-3 lead. While Corry lead the entire set, it was a much more competitive game all the way to the first Cathedral Prep timeout, when they were trailing 17-13. Corry went on an 8-3 run to close out the second set 25-16.
Corry led the third set early, 4-1 only to see Cathedral Prep respond with several tips and roll-shots that tied up the score at 5-5, but from that point on Corry was back in control. A 9-2 run with kills by Mumau, Kemp, and a combined block by Mumau and Kendall Donoghue forced a Prep timeout. The match ended on three kills: by junior middle hitter Donoghue, by Mumau set-up by Hallberg, and the final point was a kill by Kemp also assisted by senior Ava Hallberg.
“What a great environment tonight, the Corry fan base traveled well and made a huge difference in this match. I can’t wait for the home playoff match next Tuesday” said coach Kelly Goodsel. “I really thought our serve receive passing and awesome defense were the difference in the match. Seniors Sydney Mineo and Brynley Watrous executed the defensive game plan perfectly and Brynley had a perfect serve receive rating. Juniors Ali Yetzer and Ellie Carey played as defensive specialists and passed great. Our serve receive passing allowed us to run our offense really efficiently, and our defense was all over the place. It surely was frustrating for Prep’s hitters to hit shot after shot and our defenders kept digging the ball up and we converted into points” concluded Goodsel.

This is the 13th straight sweep for the Beavers and 16th on the year as they continue to roll into the state playoffs with an undefeated record of 17-0, region four champions, and now District 10 champions. They also remain ranked number one in the state. Corry will host the number three seed out of district seven (WPIAL). That team is the Waynesburg Central Raiders who swept Our Lady Sacred Heart (OLSH) 25-20, 25-18, and 25-16 in the WPIAL consolation game. The "Sweet 16" opening round of the state playoffs will see the Beavers welcoming the Raiders into the Beaver Dam on Tuesday November 4th with a start time to be determined.
