Conor Sterling got the scoring going on defense for the Beavers in Friday night's game at Harborcreek

By Jack Hasbrouck, Contributing Writer

Harbor Creek, PA- The Corry varsity football team traveled to Harbor Creek Friday night for their final region matchup against the Huskies. Thanks to a strong defensive showing, the Beavers came away with the 28-7 win. They will finish the regular season with a record of

7-2 and a region record of 4-1.

There was minimal offense in the first quarter with both teams having multiple drives stall out while leaning on the running game. The Beavers got on the scoreboard first in the final minute of the quarter on defense with a huge pick six by Conner Sterling that was returned 61 yards. An extra point from Gavin Kent gave the Beavers a 7-0 lead headed into the second quarter.

Corry took that momentum and carried it into the second quarter. After a turnover on downs from the defense, the offense notched its first score of the day on a 16 yard pass play from Lucas Baker to Keaton Frisina. An interception by Blake Cook gave the Beavers another chance to score late, but time would expire while they were in the redzone. Corry went into halftime up 13-0.

Harbor Creek opened the scoring in the second half with a huge 57 yard run from Gavin Zillman. That made it a one score game with Corry still up 13-7. Corry answered shortly after with a big 39 yard run of their own from Deion Canady. A successful two point conversion to Frisina from Baker made the score 21-7 at the end of the quarter.

After killing around four minutes to start the fourth quarter, the Beavers committed their first turnover with an interception. Corry would return the favor soon after with their second pick six of the day, this time by Marcus Meredith who ran the ball back 79 yards. A final extra point by Kent gave the Beavers the 28-7 lead. Harbor Creek failed to respond and the Beavers ran out the clock to seal the road win 28-7.

Baker completed seven passes on 14 attempts. He threw for 84 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Baker also rushed for three yards.

Canady led in rushing yards with 73 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Sterling ran for 28 yards on seven carries. Lamech Albers ran 18 yards on four carries. Jack Vanchieri ran nine yards on one carry.

In receiving yards, Frisina led the way with 57 yards and a touchdown on two receptions. Vanchieri had 15 yards on two receptions. Cook had nine yards on one reception. Alex Schmidt had eight yards on one reception.

The Beavers will have this week off as Oil City and Corry mutually agrees to cancel their game so both teams can prepare for the district 10 playoffs.
