CORRY, Pa. — The Corry Beavers Baseball team hosted the Northwestern Wildcats at Columbus Field on Monday. The Beavers took an early lead, but the Wildcats used a decisive third inning and timely hitting to pull away from Corry Varsity Beavers for a 5-3 victory.

Northwestern struck first in the opening inning when Zac Johnson delivered a run-scoring double to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. Corry answered immediately in the bottom half, capitalizing on both offense and a defensive miscue. Jacob Anderson put a blooper over the shortstop for an RBI single setting up runners on the corners. An error by Northwestern allowed another run to score, giving Corry a 2-1 advantage. The Wildcats evened things up in the second inning after Corry committed an error, setting the stage for the game’s pivotal moment an inning later.

In the third, Northwestern broke the tie for good. Connor Kranz roped a double to drive in the go-ahead run, and Johny Baumgardner followed with a single that extended the lead to 5-2. Corry managed to push across a run in the sixth inning but couldn’t close the gap further as Northwestern’s pitching and defense held firm down the stretch to seal the victory.

For Corry, Anderson and Bryce Chelton each drove in a run. The Beavers also turned a double play defensively. Baumgardner and Johnson led Northwestern at the plate with two hits apiece, while Baumgardner drove in a team-high two runs. Northwestern was aggressive on the bases, swiping five bags, with Mason Mikovich and Jacob Rader each recording multiple steals.

Dom Norris earned the win for Northwestern, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) over five innings while striking out four and walking two. Wyatt Swan provided strong relief for Corry, tossing 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six and walking four. Starter Kamdyn Moon took the loss after surrendering five runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings.

Despite the loss, Corry showed flashes early but was ultimately undone by missed opportunities and defensive lapses. “There are nights where things just don’t go your way and tonight was one of them.” Corry head coach Jake Cirigliano said. “We had several hard-hit balls that didn’t find a hole tonight. This is a tough one. Our defense had a couple of lapses tonight that ended up hurting us, but our offense was stagnant and didn’t give us a chance to put up much run wise. All in all, tomorrow is a new day, and we will be on the practice field to get better.”

The loss drops Corry to 4-6 on the year and they are 0-3 in region five play. The Beavers will look to bounce back when they host the North East Grape Pickers on Wednesday. Opening pitch is scheduled for 4:30 PM at Columbus field and is scheduled to be broadcasted on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream. www.deejexperience.com
