Corry Beavers baseball surge past North East 13-5

CORRY, PA — Corry Beavers baseball hosted the North East Grape Pickers on Wednesday night. It was a great day weather wise at Columbus Field and an even greater day at the plate for the Beavers as they piled up 16 hits on the day and had a monster sixth inning to defeat North East 13-5.
Corry finished with 16 hits and capitalized on North East’s defensive struggles and control issues on the mound. The pickers committed six errors and issued eight walks, allowing Corry to extend innings and build a commanding lead late.
North East struck first in the top of the first inning with a triple from Braydon Cornman. He would score on a wild pitch to give the pickers a 1-0 lead. The Beavers answered in the bottom of the first with three runs on a pair of singles, two doubles and an error as Tucker Jackson, Kamdyn Moon, and Carson Braswell all tapped home plate.
Corry would score again in the bottom of the third. Moon hit his second double of the day and got to third on a ground ball and then score on a Picker wild pitch making it 4-1 after three innings.
North East tightened the game up in the fourth inning. Cornman got hit by a pitch and would score off a double from Colton Owens. Gabe smith knocked Colton Owens home after a wild pitch and would then score after a passed ball and an error. North East would hold the Beavers scoreless in the fifth inning and then add another run after a lead off walk from Rylan Orengia. The Pickers took the lead 5-4.
North East carried that lead into the bottom of the sixth inning and that’s when the Beavers went off. Seven hits, five walks and a handful of errors from the visitors help Corry put nine runs on the board and secured their first region win on the year with a 13-5 victory.
Moon lead the way for the Beavers, going 3-4 on the day with three doubles, scored three times and drove in two runs. Wyatt Swan went 3-5 with two runs scored and one RBI., while T. Jackson contributed two RBIs and two runs scored. J. Lathrop also had three hits and an RBI with one run scored.
North East had six hits. Smith went 2 for 3 with an RBI, and a run scored. C. Owens had a hit and drove in two runs with one run scored.
Bryce Chelton earned the win for Corry. In three and two thirds’ innings the hurler gave up four runs on five hits, three of them earned. He had one strikeout on zero walks. Moon in relief pitched the final three innings, allowing just one earned run on one hit. He rang up three batters and gave up just one walk.
Matthew Nishnick started on the bump for North East. In five innings the pitcher gave up four runs on nine hits, one of the earned. He had four strikeouts and walked three. Owens took the loss in relief after allowing nine runs on seven hits, eight of them earned. He had one strike out and walked five batters on the day.
Corry head coach Jake Cirigliano was thrilled with his team’s performance. “We waited until the sixth inning to break out, but it wasn’t too late. I am so proud of these guys! Bryce pitched a great game and Kam finished well! We had great at bats tonight and fought hard at the plate! Great win tonight!”
It marks the first region win in the year as Corry improves to 1-3 in the region and 5-6 overall on the year. Corry will head to Slippery Rock University on Friday where they will take on the Slippery Rock Rockets at Jack Critchfield Park. It will be a varsity only game and Slippery Rock will be celebrating senior night.
