Corry, PA- Corry volleyball remains undefeated with a sweep of the Union City Bears on Tuesday night. 25-15, 25-13, 25-14. The Beavers move to 3-0 in Region 4 and hold a 7-0 overall record and still remain ranked number one in the state in AA Classification.

In an effort to bring the two Route 6 communities together, The Corry Journal sponsored the volleyball match allowing fans wearing red, white, and blue to enter for free. “It was an awesome environment, with a gym full of people in attendance to cheer on good volleyball and all supporting the nations colors, we are grateful for The Corry Journal’s support” said coach Kelly Goodsel.

The first set started off a little slow for Corry, contributing three of the five Union City points by hitting the ball into the net or out of bounds. Corry eventually got into the groove and built a 13-6 lead when Union City took their first timeout. The lady beavers cruised the rest of the game and closed out the first set 25-15. Juniors Regan Kemp and Rylee Nickerson tallied 5 service aces (3 and 2 respectively) in the first set.

The second set, Corry was more dialed in and jumped out to a 7-1 lead on two Grace Allen kills and another service ace by both Kemp and Nickerson. Senior Ava Hallberg set her fellow setter, junior Haley Mumau who scored two kills, followed by a service ace by senior Sydney Mineo, expanding the score to 14-4. Freshmen Alivia Swan saw her first varsity action, collecting a kill and teaming up with Grace Allen to earn a block. Fellow freshmen Jordyn Watrous served an ace to close out set 2, 25-13.

The third set was very similar to set 2 with Corry jumping out to a 8-1 lead on two Lauren Brundage kills. Fellow sophomores Katrena Downey notched her first official varsity kill with a shot down the line, and Naomi Brown built the lead to 18-8 on three consecutive service aces. “I thought we played pretty good defense, we were flying around. A specific play was where seniors Sydney Mineo and Brynley Watrous dug a ball, chased it all the way to the back wall, and were able to get the ball back over the net. Junior defensive specialists Ellie Carey and Alison Yetzer both made significant plays in serve receive and on defense” coach Goodsel pointed out.

Corry JV also got the job done against the Bears with a sweep of their own 25-10 and 25-14 against a scrappy, but less experienced Union City JV team.

From Mark Brenner

Corry JV Volleyball Coach

The first and second set played out similarly. Union City served consistently, only missing one serve in the match, but Corry found ways to get out to early leads and then grow them to finish off the sets.

Corry dominated in almost all phases of the game, but definitely struggled to pass the ball in serve receive. Normally if you struggle to pass the ball, you either lose or end up winning by a close margin. The difference with this team is that our offense and serving are sometimes dominant enough that they can cover for our passing woes. This is not a good long term strategy, however, so we will be working on our passing in practice as soon as we get back into the practice gym.

Notable play included a dominant performance by outside hitter Lauren Brundage with 10 kills. No matter how far off the net she was set, she managed to supply an effective hitting offense.

Corry serving leaders were setter Maci Kemp (8 service points, 3 aces), setter Nomi Brown, libero Jordyn Watrous, and Brundage each had (5 service points, 1 ace) Corry hitters were led by Brundage 10 kills, while middle hitters Morgan VanderSchaaff and Liv Swan had two kills each. Defensively, Watrous led with nine digs, Makayla Comitz had four digs and Delaney Church had 3 digs. Kemp had 15 assists.

Corry teams Improves to 7- 0 on the year and Varsity remains ranked number one in PIAA AA classification. The Beavers head to Seneca tonight to take on the Bobcats. The match will be streamed live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream. www.deejexperience.com
