CORRY, PA — As spring weather slipped back into hibernation, a cool, crisp 47-degree cloudy day did little to dampen the girls’ spirits. The Lady Beavers, coming off a loss and a four-day lull in live action, erupted for 15 runs in the second inning and rolled to an 18-0 victory over the North East Grape Pickers in Thursday’s softball action at the Lou Hanna Athletic Complex.
There was a mini eruption in the first inning. After stranding two Pickers on base in the top half, Corry put two runners of their own on in the bottom of the inning. Alison Yetzer stepped to the plate and launched one over the center-field fence for her second career varsity home run, giving Corry a 3-0 lead after one.
Corry shut the Pickers down in the top of the second with a pair of strikeouts from Braylyn Gerdy and a 5-3 putout. What happened next resembled a volcanic explosion offensively for the home team. Corry belted 11 hits in the inning and scored 15 runs, as every Beaver in the lineup tapped home plate at least once, putting the contest out of reach and triggering the mercy rule. “It was another overall great team win,” Corry head coach Allison Williams said. “The girls came in with energy and got the job done.”
Alison Yetzer led the offensive surge, going 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, two runs scored, and five RBIs on the day. Sydney Mineo recorded three singles, scored three times, and drove in three runs. Rachel Moats added multiple hits, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Contributions came throughout the lineup as Corry consistently pressured North East’s defense.
Gerdy earned the win in the circle, allowing just one hit over two scoreless innings while striking out three and walking two. Maci Kemp followed with a scoreless inning of relief, striking out three and walking two while allowing just one hit to complete the shutout.
Sydney Wittman was charged with the loss after surrendering 16 runs on 13 hits, all earned, including one home run. She did not record a strikeout and walked three batters. Alyssa Holdsworth pitched one inning in relief, allowing two runs on one hit, neither earned. She walked one and did not record a strikeout.
With the win, Corry improves to 10-3 overall and 7-2 in Region 4 play. The Beavers have the weekend off before a busy week ahead. They travel to Franklin on Monday to take on the Knights, host Cathedral Prep on Tuesday for senior night, and head to Conneaut on Thursday. With just two weeks left in the regular season, the girls will be looking to make a strong push heading into the postseason.
