Albion, PA — The Corry Lady Beavers softball team traveled to Northwestern High School on a windy day that was dancing on the verge of rain on Monday. Unfortunately, Corry fell to the Wildcats getting blanked11–0, in a region four matchup.
Northwestern got off to a strong start, scoring early putting up two runs in the first inning and continuing to build momentum through the middle innings. A big third inning helped the Wildcats pull away, highlighted by a three-run shot from Alayah Ruland. Northwestern scored five runs in the third off multiple extra-base hits, aggressive baserunning that put pressure on the Corry defense.
Despite the score, Corry showed defensive effort throughout the game. The Lady Beavers turned several routine outs in the field and worked through a pitching change to slow Northwestern’s offense late in the game. But uncharacteristic errors from the Beavers throughout the really hurt Corry and they couldn’t overcome them.
Corry’s lone hit came during the top of the fourth inning from Ayvah Taylor. Taylor would steal second and then get to third on a pass ball but get left stranded as the Beavers were unable to string together additional offense against Northwestern pitching.
Braylyn Gerdy would take the loss in the circle for Corry. In three innings worth of work, she gave up nine runs on nine hits, but only four of those runs were earned. She had no strike outs, and no walks but gave up two home runs on the day. Maci Kemp would enter in the fourth inning in relief, pitching one inning. She gave up two runs on two hits, neither of them were earned. Kemp tallied one strikeout and no walks.
For the Wildcats, Zoey Johnson would pick up the win. In a shutout performance Johnson gave up only one hit. She had three strikeouts and gave up two walks on the day. Johnson also smashed a rocket of a solo home run in the Fourth Inning.
“We had an off day.” Head coach Allison Williams said. “We struggled defensively and we let the little things add up. Offensively, we only had three strikeouts. We were aggressive at the plate but struggled to make solid contact. We will learn from tonight and come back stronger.”
With the loss the Beavers fall to 2-1on the season and 1-1 in region four. They will look to bounce back on Thursday night as they are scheduled to host the Lady Braves of Iroquois. The opening pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM and the game will be broadcast on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream. www.deejexperience.com
