Guys Mills, Pa. – Corry JV came away with a two set win on the road, over a tough serving, well coached Maplewood team on Tuesday Night. The teams were fairly well matched, but as each set came to a close, Corry serving and offense was enough to hold on for the wins 25-20 and 25-21.
In the first set, Corry got out to an early lead, only to allow Maplewood back into the set late. With Corry ahead 19-18, Corry servers, Maci Kemp and Lauren Brundage finished off the set with tough serving that kept Maplewood from generating in-system offense. Hitting by Outside Hitter Ava West, Brundage, and middle hitter Liv Swan allowed Corry to stay on the service line through the end of the set.
In the second set, Corry got down early, struggling to pass the ball in serve receive. Maplewood's lead stretched to 12-3 and it looked like Corry would drop the set. Then setter Naomi Brown served seven straight service points to start the rally. Her hard float serves kept Maplewood scrambling and allowed Corry to get back into the fight. In the end, it was Corry serving and hitting that prevailed again.
"This was not a pretty win, but it was a win against a good team, and it highlighted our need to pass the ball better among other things." JV coach Mark Brenner said. "We are grateful for the opportunity to play tough serving and ball control teams like Maplewood, because they help us get better."
Notable play included service runs by Brown, Libero Jordyn Watrous, and Kemp.
Brown lead the way with nine service points including two aces. Kemp had eight service points with three aces, Brundage with six service points and two aces, Watrous had five service points with two aces, and Swan had four service points and three aces. Hitting leaders were Brundage with four kills, Ava West with three kills, and Swan with two kills. Defensively, Watrous led the way with six digs, followed by Brown with five digs. Brown had six assists and Kemp had five.
Corry JV moves to 4-0 on the year and will head to Iroquois on Tuesday to take on a much improved Lady Braves team.
