Rylee Nickerson crushes a perfect quick set from Haley Mumau to go up 8-4 in the first set of play against Fairview on Tuesday night.

Report by Kelly Goodsel

Corry Volleyball Head Coach

Corry, PA- Corry volleyball moved to 5-0 in Region 4 and 9-0 overall with a sweep of visiting Fairview 25-22, 25-18, and 25-14.

Corry jumped out to a 4-1 lead on a kill by junior Grace Allen and then a service ace and kill by fellow classmate Regan Kemp. Corry expanded the lead to five points on kills by Haley Mumau and Rylee Nickerson. After being up 9-5, Fairview fought back and tied the game at 11-11, but Corry responded with another Allen kill and Nickerson collected two more kills herself and forced a Fairview timeout with Corry up 15-11. Once again, Fairview would not go away and after the scored was tied 20-20, each team traded points until 22-22 when

Grace Allen got a kill and a service ace and the first set ended 25-22 on a Fairview hitting error.

The second set was similar to the first, with Corry jumping out to a 9-4 lead on a balanced offense, kills by Kemp, Allen, Nickerson, and sophomore opposite hitter Lauren Brundage. Fairview tied the set up at 10-10, only to see Corry go on another five-point run and Fairview took its first time out trailing 15-10. Corry built the largest lead of the set at 21-14 and then cruised to a seven-point victory, 25-18.

The third set was tied up at 10-10 when Corry went on an eight-to-one run and Fairview took the first time out trailing 18-11. Junior middle hitter Kendall Donoghue put her imprint on the set with a big block and then a kill off high hands to left back. Corry was in full control the rest of the way on two kills by Allen, another kill by Brundage, and two final kills by Nickerson, winning the set 25-14.

“I think we wore them down mentally with our defense, four different players contributed… senior Brynley Watrous played libero the first two sets and defensive specialist (DS) the third set; fellow senior Sydney Mineo played DS the first two sets and libero the third set; Ali Yetzer and Ellie Carey both came in and contributed in serve receive and defensively. It can get very frustrating for hitters to keep swinging and not get a kill, then they start to try different things or swing harder or get tricky and end up making errors… I think we got them frustrated” said coach Goodsel.

“In addition to our balanced defense (Mineo with 15 and Watrous with 14 digs), we really spread the ball around with outsides (Allen and Kemp) getting 10 and 9 kills respectively, Brundage and Nickerson each getting 6 kills, and Mumau and Dononghue with 4 and 2 respectively. This is probably our most balanced offense of the season and really put a lot of pressure on Fairview’s defense” concluded Goodsel.

With the win Corry remains undefeated at 9-0 overall, 5-0 in Region four action. The Beavers will travel to Mercyhurst Prep on Thursday, October 2nd to take on the Lady Lakers. JV opening serve is scheduled for 6:00 PM with Varsity action to follow. The match will be streamed live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream. www.deejexperience.com
