Clarion, PA - Corry volleyball has made it back to the PIAA state semi-finals for two consecutive years after a convincing three set sweep over the District six champion Bald Eagle Area Eagles who where ranked number two over all in the PVCA polls. Corry, who has been ranked number one for the majority of the season would win the match 25-17, 25-14, & 25-15.

In front of a large Corry crowd, the lady beavers jumped out to an early 13-4 lead on a balanced offense; juniors Grace Allen, Rylee Nickerson, and freshman Ava West racked up seven kills before BEA took their first timeout. The teams basically played even the rest of the way with Corry winning the first set 25-17.

The second set was much more competitive with the set tied at 4-4 and 5-5, when Corry stretched out the lead to 12-8 on a Regan Kemp kill followed by a Kemp – Kendall Donoghue block. BEA served, got a kill and a service ace and the score narrowed to 13-11. Corry settled down and rattled off 12 of the next 15 points; senior setter Ava Hallberg connected with outside hitter Regan Kemp and pushed the lady beavers to a 25-14 set win.

The match looked to be in complete control when Corry took an early 7-0 lead. However, after a BEA timeout, the eagles mounted a comeback, taking the lead briefly at 13-12. The Eagles missed the next serve which settled the Corry team down and off to another 12 of 15 points run. One of the Corry points came on a strange play; BEA took a time out at 23-14, however this was their third timeout and as a result, Corry was awarded a point. They would close it out two points later on a service error sealing the Beavers spot in the Semifinals on Tuesday.

“I thought we did a great job neutralizing the BEA big gun. Having not played a tall left-handed opposite hitter all season that is offensive in both the front and back row, I figured it would take some time to figure out the proper angles. By the second set, we started getting our hands on almost every swing and got a couple of huge blocks by Allen and Nickerson, which really affected BEA’s offense. Even when BEA got a shot around or over our block our defense was right there to pick up the digs… seniors Brynley Watrous and Sydney Mineo played great, both on defense and in serve receive. They were the key to our offense running efficiently” stated coach Kelly Goodsel.

The win was the 15th straight sweep dating all the way back to September 16th against Iroquois and 18th sweep overall on the year. The Beavers remain undefeated at 19-0 and with battle with the Avonworth Antelopes on Tuesday. The Antelopes swept their opponent Everett (District 5 Champions) 25-15, 25-14, & 25-12. The time and place is to be determined. DeeJ Experience is waiting PIAA approval to cover the Semifinal showdown.
