Erie, PA - The rivalry between Corry and Cathedral Prep volleyball continues to intensify, after last year meeting three times (Corry won the region match, the D10 finals match, and the PIAA state semi- final match), Corry continued to hold the upper hand with a sweep tonight. Corry has won four matches in a row, but none of them were easy, including tonight’s match 27-25, 25-22, and 25-19)

Similar to the Iroquois match on Tuesday night, Corry trailed early (4-1) and then had to take a timeout trailing 14-8. Prep held the largest lead at 17-10 before Corry started to chip away at the lead. Junior outside hitter Grace Allen had three kills and a kill by sophomore Lauren Brundage cut the lead to only three points (18-15 Prep). After a couple of Prep points, Corry cut the five point Prep lead to only two points (22-20). Prep again scored a couple of points and Corry took the final timeout trailing 24-20. Prep had a hitting error and junior Regan Kemp went to the serving line and she led the team all the way back to a 25-24 lead on a couple of blocks by Grace Allen and Rylee Nickerson. Prep scored and then had a service error to give the 26-25 lead to Corry and junior Rylee Nickerson served and ace and Corry pulled out the 27-25 first set win.

Corry led most of the second set up to 10-10 and after a Corry timeout, Prep went on a 6-2 run. Corry tied the game up at 16-16 and both teams played point for point to 22-22 when Grace Allen hit a hard ball down the line to force Prep timeout trailing 23-22. Rylee Nickerson and Allen had back to back to kills to close out set two, 25-22.

Corry again led the third set most of the game until Cathedral Prep tied up the game at 15-15. At 19-19, junior setter Haley Mumau scored on a dump, the Nickerson had kill, and finally senior libero Brynley Watrous had a service ace. After a Prep timeout, Watrous followed with another ace and Corry closed out the third set and match with kills by Nickerson and Allen.

“I think between our ball control early and catching up to the speed of the game, we struggled early." Head coach Kelly Goodsel said. Coming back from down 20-24 in the first set to win 27-25 was huge for our confidence and really settled our kids down. Prep played well and I’m sure they will continue to get better, so this rivalry is only going to grow. I’m glad we got out of here with a win tonight”.

It was an entire team effort, and while Grace Allen and Regan Kemp catch the headlines with

double digit kills, senior Brynley Watrous filled the stats sheet with 20 digs, 3 service aces, and two assists. Haley Mumau conducted the offense with 39 assists and while senior Ava Hallberg didn’t get an official stat, her setting presence in each set and allowed Corry to set up a different blocking strategy that made a difference. Middle hitters Rylee Nickerson and Kendall Donoghue were big at the net combining for 4 kills and 3 blocks. Sophomore Lauren Brundage rebounded from a rough JV match start to playing well in the varsity match, and defensive specialists Sydney Mineo (senior) and Ali Yetzer (junior) both had key defensive digs to keep rallies going.

With the critical region four win, the Beavers improve to 6-0 on the year and are in the Driver's seat of region four at 2-0. There is plenty of season left though with other teams looking to change that. Corry will head to Meadville on saturday for an all day tournament before finally getting back home in the Beaver Dam on Tuesday to take on the Bears of Union City. That game will be live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream. www.deejexperience.com
