Report from Kelly Goodsel
Location: Corry High School
Corry volleyball faced a very improved Cochranton team Thursday night, winning in three straight sets. 25-21, 25-17, and 26-24.
Corry made a number of mistakes early in set 1 and trailing 6-11, coach Goodsel called his first timeout to try and settle the lady beavers down. The timeout worked temporarily, with Regan Kemp pounding two consecutive kills, followed by a Haley Mumau service ace and Corry was back in the game. Sophomore Lauren Brundage, Juniors Rylee Nickerson and Grace Allen had three consecutive kills to gain the first lead of the game at 16-15 and forcing Cochranton to take their first timeout. Nickerson and Brundage combined for a block and then two Grace Allen kills and Corry lead 21-18. Corry maintained the three-point lead until game point when Nickerson and Kemp combined for a game ending block.
Cochranton started the second set with another lead at 4-2, but two consecutive Brundage kills followed by two Grace Allen service aces and Corry was in the lead for good. Corry dominated the second set building a 23-12 lead before Corry gave up a few points on serve receive.
Cochranton again took an early lead in the third set, this time building an eight-point lead before Corry took their first time out, trailing 15-7. Corry responded out of the timeout with a Regan Kemp kill, senior setter Ava Hallberg followed up with a service ace and four kills by Grace Allen, assisted by Hallberg and Corry had tied up the game 18-18. Corry and Cochranton traded points to 23-23 when Corry gave up a service ace, causing coach Goodsel to call a timeout trailing 23-24. Cochranton missed their serve coming out of the timeout, Haley Mumau (Corry’s setter) got a kill from a Rylee Nickerson set (Nickerson is the middle hitter), and junior middle hitter, Kendall Donoghue finished off the game with a kill.
“We saw Cochranton play at the Fort LeBoeuf tournament and they didn’t finish well. Well, let me tell you, they have made big improvements, especially in serve receive and defense” said coach Goodsel. “We continue to play with our line-up and getting a lot of different players playing time. Some of that shuffling of players caused us to make a few unusual mistakes.”
Statistically, Grace Allen had a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs, Regan Kemp had nine kills and sophomore Lauren Brundage had 8 kills with zero hitting errors. The defense was led by seniors Brynley Watrous and Sydney Mineo who combined for 15 digs. Junior Haley Mumau and senior Ava Hallberg distributed 41 assists.
DeeJ Experience caught up with Grace Allen after the match who was the Crotty Chevrolet Player of the game.

The Beavers improve to 3-0 on the season and are set for a three game road stretch before returning home to the comfy quarters of the Beaver Dam. The Next match will be one of those "Highlighted on the schedule" games as they head to the Woodshed to take on the Tigers at Maplewood on Tuesday. JV gets going at 6:00 PM with Varsity action to follow.
