Corry volleyball opened the 2025 season with a convincing sweep of the McDowell Trojans, 25-7, 25-17, and 25-7

Corry’s 2025 seniors led the team on to the court Tuesday night for pre-match introductions and warm-ups and once the match began, those same three seniors led the team in their play.  Senior setter Ava Hallberg led the offense collecting 5 assists in the first set, and Brynley Watrous (libero) and Sydney Mineo (defensive specialist) led the defense combining for 5 digs and two service aces.  Corry jumped out to a 14-6 lead before McDowell took a time-out, and then Corry finished the set on an 11-1 run, winning the first set 25-7.

The second set was more competitive as McDowell held the early lead and the game was tied at 12-12 behind some good offensive plays and much improved defense.  Mid-way through the set, Corry’s outside hitters (juniors Grace Allen and Regan Kemp) started figuring out the blocking and defensive holes and went on a 13-5 run to take the second set.

“I thought our middles started putting pressure on McDowell, juniors Rylee Nickerson and Kendall Donoghue combined for four kills and forced the McDowell middles to wait longer before going outside to block, which opened more 1-on-1 shots for Grace and Regan.” Goodsel said.

The third set was really never in question, tough Corry serving put the lady beavers in the lead early and McDowell never recovered.  Freshmen Ava West had three kills in a row, set from senior Ava Hallberg, to close out the game 25-7.

“I thought the team responded well to the excitement of an opening night, as well as, dealing with three different line-ups.  Freshmen Ava West had a quietly successful first match of her career (3 kills and 1 block), sophomore Naomi Brown had a number of swings and played good defense, and sophomore Lauren Brundage had two kills in her starting varsity debut.  Defensively, we played well with seniors Brynley Watrous and Sydney Mineo leading the team, along with juniors Ali Yetzer and Ellie Carey both served and defended well” said coach Goodsel.

The offense was led by junior Haley Mumau and Ava Hallberg with 26 and 8 assists respectively.  Grace Allen led the team with 15 kills, and Regan Kemp had 6 kills and 11 digs.

“I’m really proud of how the team handled the pressure of the first home match and looking forward to tomorrow to see how we treat the first road trip coming after the first day of school” concluded Goodsel.

Corry starts off the season at 1-0 on the year but have a quick turnaround as the Beavers will travel to Clarion on Wednesday night to take on the Bobcats in what should be a good test for this high powered Beaver team. JV opening serve is set for 6:00pm with Varsity action to follow. For those who can't make the trip, you can watch it live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream With Scott and Tim on the call at www.deejexperience.com

We talked with coach Goodsel after the game about the win, the progress of the team, and the upcoming game against the Bobcats of Clarion.
