Guys Mills, PA - Corry volleyball headed to the Woodshed on Tuesday night and moves to a 4-0 start to the season after winning a thrilling match against the Maplewood Tigers. The non region Match went all five sets with Corry finishing on top 18-25, 25-14, 25-19,20-25, and 15-11.
In a match up of the number one team in class AA (Corry) and number ten team in class A (Maplewood). Both teams played like they belong in the state rankings. Maplewood took the early lead in set one, up 4-1 before Grace Allen collected two consecutive
kills. Setter Haley Mumau tied the game up at 7-7 on a perfectly placed dump, and she tied it up at 9-9 again on a setter kill. Maplewood took command of the first game at 17-12 on a couple of Corry errors and several kills by the Maplewood team. While the play was competitive the rest of the game, Maplewood maintained the lead and closed out the first set 25-17.
In the second set Corry jumped out to an early 8-2 lead on a kill by sophomore Lauren Brundage and three consecutive kills by junior middle hitter Rylee Nickerson. Maplewood took their first time out at 14-9 after a Mumau service ace. Three kills by Regan Kemp and a kill by Grace Allen made the score 18-11 and Corry cruised to the 25-14 victory.
The third set was a battle with neither team generating more than a three-point lead. Grace Allen had a service ace to make the score 17-16 and Maplewood took a timeout. Corry scored five of the next seven points on three kills by Allen and two kills by Nickerson, forcing Maplewood to take their second and final timeout at 22-18. Mumau and Kemp scored two more points, and Maplewood had a hitting error to close out the third set with a Corry 25-19 win.
Corry looked like they were in control much of the fourth set, up 7-3, 13-7, and 16-10 before
Maplewood found some rhythm. Maplewood had a couple of kills and a couple of Corry errors forced a Corry timeout up only 17-16. Corry scored the 18 th point on Maplewood error, and a Nickerson kill, forcing the first timeout by Maplewood trailing 16-19. Maplewood scored a couple of kills and Corry made three errors which caused the second Corry timeout at 22-20 Maplewood. Two serve receive errors and a hitting error finished off the scoring with a Maplewood win 25-20.
The fifth set was a swing of emotions, Maplewood got up early and led 6-3, but Corry didn’t give up, scoring the next five points on a kill by Allen, a double block by Allen and Nickerson, followed by two service aces by senior Brynley Watrous, and a solo block by Allen on Maplewood’s setter made the score 8-6 at Maplewood’s first time out. Maplewood tied the game at 8-8 on two kills and Corry responded with kills by Nickerson and Kemp making the score 12-8 at the second timeout by Maplewood. The Tigers closed the gap to 12-10 before Nickerson collected her season high, 15th kill, a Maplewood hitting error just out, and Kemp finished the game with a kill to close out the game 15-11.
“I was really proud of how the team responded to a loud environment, a very good defensive team, and facing the first adversity of the season." Head Coach Kelly Goodsel said. "While our serve receive passing wasn’t where we wanted it, I thought the team responded to in-game adjustments that made a huge impact. First we really focused on distributing the ball more to the middle in set two; then we made some blocking adjustments; we moved our hitters around to get better match-ups against Maplewood’s block; and after Maplewood made countering moves, we adjusted again to get the right match-ups”
Our defense was really solid with seniors Sydney Mineo leading the team with 33 digs and Brynley Watrous had 20 digs and four service aces. Three juniors had double-doubles, Grace Allen had 19 kills and 14 digs, Regan Kemp had 13 kills and 13 digs, and Haley Mumau had a career high 53 assists and 14 digs. With all of that offense, Rylee Nickerson led the team with a 464 hitting percentage, 15 kills and only 2 hitting errors, 7 digs and 2 blocks for good measure.
With the tough 3-2 win, Corry is now 4-0 (all non-region matches) and is still rated number one in the PVCA Poll for the second consecutive week. Their next matches will both be on the road, next Tuesday at an improving Iroquois team and then a big match up at Cathedral Prep on Thursday, September 18th .

We caught up with our Crotty Chevrolet Player of the game, Rylee Nickerson and asked her about the performance!
Rylee Nickerson led the team with a 464 hitting percentage, 15 kills and only 2 hitting errors, 7 digs and 2 blocks
