Corry Volleyball Head Coach
Corry and North East volleyball teams have played some pretty memorable matches over the years, including region championships and District 10 titles the last two years. This year Corry was in the driver’s seat, leading the Region by two (over both Cathedral Prep and Fairview). With only two matches left, all they had to do was beat North East to become Region Champions, and the lady Beavers took care of business. Corry Defeated the lady Pickers in three straight sets 25-11, 25-13,
and 25-23.
Corry jumped out to a 6-0 lead on tough serving by Halle Albers and kills by Allison Sawyer and Aubrey Chase. North East fought back with four points of their own, but that is when Corry went on a 19-7 run to end the first set comfortably 25-11.
Corry was just as dominant in the second set, jumping out to a 7-0 lead on four service aces by Albers. After North East closed the deficit to three points (10-7), Corry again went on a big run (15-6) on kills by Chase, Sawyer, Sadye Dyne, Regan Kemp, and Grace Allen.
The third set was more competitive, with North East holding a one point lead 3-2 but Corry never trailed again. Corry built the lead to 23-17 and 24-19, but North East would not go away. They got within one point 24-23, then Allison Sawyer pounded a kill through the block and closed out the match.
The Corry balance of 8 different players collecting a kill led by Allison Sawyer, and the scrappy defense led by Makenna Moore with 12 digs, was too much for North East to handle. Senior defensive specialist Sydney Woods led the team and junior Bailee McCray was solid all night in serve receive. Payton McCray led the team with 25 assists and Haley Mumau contributed 9.
“I was really happy with our right side offense tonight, Allison Sawyer led the team with 11 kills and sophomores Regan Kemp and Rylee Nickerson had 3 kills from the right side (filling Emmalee Carr’s spot as she recovers from an ankle injury).” commented coach Kelly Goodsel.
Goodsel continued, “It was a fun atmosphere with the Corry Marching Band in attendance, and I thought our energy / mental engagement was solid all night.”
With the Win, Corry claims the region 4 crown in back to back seasons and they improve their record to 11-1 with an unblemished record in the region at 8-0. The Beavers will travel to Cochranton on Saturday for a tournament and the then head on the road next week as they finish up their season at Northwestern on Tuesday and at Saegertown on Thursday.
