Corry Volleyball Poses with their Meadville Invitational Champions Shirts after a long day of good competition.

Report by Kelly Goodsel

Corry Volleyball Head Coach

Meadville, PA- Corry volleyball came off an emotional and important win over Cathedral Prep Thursday night and continued the strong season with another tournament win at the annual Meadville Bulldogs Tournament, their second straight tournament win on the year.

Corry started the day off slow against Saegertown, but eventually woke up and pulled out the first pool play victory against the Panthers. Corry dominated the first set against Keystone (a Pittsburgh area team), but several uncharacteristically basic mistakes in the second set allowed Keystone to take the second set. Corry dominated the Cochranton Cardinals, GM Lancers, and Titusville Rockets.

In the playoffs, Corry continued to have control of the competition beating Titusville, Keystone, and Saegertown. If the names are familiar, yes, all these teams were in Corry’s original pool. There was a second pool… but, the Corry pool of six teams (Corry, Keystone, Saegertown, Cochranton, General McLane, and Titusville) were the tougher pool; the other pool included Slippery Rock, Meadville, Erie First Christian, Erie High, Sharon, and Mercyhurst Prep).

It was a great day in the gym, with all 11 players getting plenty of playing time and each team

member having key contributions to the tournament victory. Seniors led the day, setter Ava

Hallberg had a career day, leading the team with 80 assists and contributed 16 digs, 4 kills, and an ace. Brynley Watrous had 42 digs, 5 service aces and played front row several times with no errors! Sydney Mineo led the team in two categories: 63 digs and 7 service aces.

“Tournaments are always challenging, playing teams back-to-back with different strengths and weaknesses challenges the players and the coaching staff to adjust to each opponent in a short period of time. For example, Keystone had a small but super dynamic outside hitter, General McLane had tall middle hitters, Cochranton had a number of match-up problems. So a long day in the gym, playing 13 games against different opponents challenges players both physically and mentally. Our team performed well throughout the day, only dropping one set all day (by two points)”.

“We played through some adversity (injury and soreness) and tough competition that put pressure on us to perform late in several sets. I’m super proud of how the team responded to that pressure and scored key points when needed” Goodsel concluded.

The tournament win gives them number two on the year as they won the Fort LeBoeuf tournament back on August 30th. The Beavers will head into a busy week were focus will be needed. Tuesday they Host the Scrappy Union City Bears before a Wednesday night road trip to Seneca. On top of that, there is all the Homecoming festivities all week long including the parade on Thursday night, the Homecoming game on Friday, and the dance on Saturday.

The Beavers enter into the week with a 6-0 record (2-0 in region 4) and ranked number one in the state in AA Classification.
