Erie, PA- Corry JV traveled to Cathedral Prep on Thursday to take on a loud and rowdy Ramblers team. Corry would silence that noise though by winning their sixth straight game of the year, beating Cathedral Prep in two straight sets 25-21 and 25-10.
In the first set, Corry struggled to side out early on, allowing Prep to get a large lead at 8-1. Most of Prep's points came from unforced Corry hitting errors and serve receive errors. Then Corry settled down and the next two Corry servers, setter Maci Kemp and outside hitter Lauren Brundage, served a total of six aces. At the end of Brundage's serving run Corry led 10-9. From that point on, Corry outplayed Prep in all phases of the game and went on to win the set.
The second set continued where the first set left off, with Corry dominating in all phases of the game, and siding out immediately when Prep had the serve. Serving and in-system offense were key to winning this set. Passing and defense were good enough to keep our offense scoring.
"The energy output and body language was good throughout and I thought we were able to be resilient when playing from behind in the first set." Coach Mark Brenner said. " Five Corry hitters with four kills each showed that we have a balanced offense. We continue to get better as a team and are enjoying the wins!"
Notable play included a serving run of four by Brundage that included four aces, and a serving run of seven by setter Naomi Brown including two aces. Our freeball passing by liberos Mikayla Comitz and Jordan Watrous, along with defensive specialist Delaney Church allowed us to run a balanced offense. Right side Katie Downey had two very hard hit kills.
Corry serving leaders were Kemp (eight service points, three aces), Brown (seven service points, two aces), Brundage (five service points, four aces), and Alivia Swan (five service points, one ace). Five Corry hitters notched four kills each, they were Morgan VanderSchaaff, Swan, Brundage, Downey, and Ava West. Defensively, Jordan Watrous led with six digs, while Brown, Kemp, and Comitz had 4 digs each. Kemp had 11 assists and Brown had eight assists.
Corry JV moves to 6-0 and will head to Cambridge Springs Saturday to compete in a JV Tournament before Tuesday's home match against Union City. Tuesday's Match will be broadcasted live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream. www.deejexperience.com
