Zach "Turbo" Turben Sends Corry to 3A Football Semi Finals with A Late FG In Dramatic Win Over Fort LeBoeuf

By Scott Lockwood

It was a cool wet and dreary night at War Memorial Field. We Call it playoff football weather in northwestern Pennsylvania.  While the weather was not even close to the monsoon the Beavers and Bison played back in September, the memory of losing by a yard still haunted Corry. That memory would soon vanish with nine seconds to go into this particular game and a new one would soon replace it. With the kick heard around district 10, the Beavers would defeat the Fort LeBoeuf Bison in a low scoring battle 9-6.

Now, 9-6 doesn’t sound very exciting as defensive struggles rarely are. The saying goes, defense wins championships, but offense puts people in the seats. I can assure you that on this day there was enough drama to fill a whole slab of daytime tv.

Fort LeBoeuf received the opening kickoff to start the game, and the Beaver defense would go to work early quickly forcing the Bison into a third and seven. Dominic Walters would get loose with a keeper off the right side and racked up a 37-yard run. A run by Black had LeBoeuf fist and ten at the Beavers 14. Corry Slammed the door shut after a high snap from center had the Bison at fourth and 16 and a penalty push Fort Leboeuf even further back and the Beavers would hold on fourth down.

Corry’s first drive did not go well either as the Bison had them pinned deep at the Beavers own one. Corry would have to punt from deep in their own endzone and with that both defenses set the tone of how the game was going to go. It was going to be a dog fight the entire way and if either team was going to pull off the win, they were going to have to get gritty and force their will.

After the punt, LeBouef had a first and ten from the Beavers 35. A muffed handoff by the Bison was recovered by the Beavers and that’s when Corry’s offense started to move thanks to some strong running From Nolan Carey and Lamach Albers. The Bison finally held Corry to a fourth and two, but a hard count got the Bison to jump extending the drive. It was tough sledding for Corry. Like chipping away at a huge stone. Short runs and short pass plays ran out the first quarter of play and it was still scoreless.

Corry would strike first in the second quarter as Nolan Carey Dropped back to pass and delivered a strike to Blake Cook for an 11-yard touchdown. The PAT however was no good, perhaps foreshadowing future fortunes as this kick went off the left upright and was no good. Corry would lead 6-0.

The next score came late in the third quarter where the Bison would answer back. First and ten from the 27-yard line is where the Bisons drive would start at 9:54 on the clock in the third quarter of play. Fort LeBoeuf went ground and pound with Keepers from Walters and strong running from stand out running back Damien Blose. Leboeuf had it second down and goal from just inside the one-yard line when Blose punched it in for the Bison and the game was tied. On the try after the Bison faked a PAT to go for two, but a personal foul flag against the Bison would push the try all the way back 16-yard line. The Bison kicked the PAT but it went wide right and the game remained tied 6-6.

Corry got a huge kick return from Cook who gave the Beavers great field position with a first and 10 on the Bison 30-yard line. LeBoeuf's defense would hold strong forcing the Beavers to go for it on fourth and fifteen from the 20. Fort LeBoeuf shut it down and the Bison took over possession.

Both teams traded defensive stops. As they traded punts, Corry would take possession on their own 46 with 2:13 to go in the game. On first down, the Bison would bring pressure sacking Carey for a loss of five. On the next play, Corry handed the ball to Cook on a jet sweep and he made his way out to the 50, setting up a third and manageable six. The next play was a pass that was broken up setting up a fourth and six. Carey dropped back to pass and threw it deep down field. A critical flag came flying in giving Corry a fresh set of downs on a pass interference call against the Bison.

The Beavers worked the ball down to the 20-yard line setting up the biggest kick of Zach Turben’s life. The Beavers lined it up and Turban was ready, then the whistles blew as Fort Leboeuf called a time out trying to ice the kicker. After the timeout, the Beavers lined it up again. The crowd was fanatically cheering, the hearts were racing, and then time seemed to stop. Like a slow-motion scene from the movies the snap, Will Allen set the ball down and Turben stepped into the kick as an eerie hush came over War Memorial Stadium. That is until the ping of the crossbar sounded, and an electric energy filled the Beaver Nation bleachers. “Good! It’s good! It went off the crossbar and in! It's Good!” exclaimed the media in the press box! It was the kick heard around district ten. With nine seconds left, the Beavers would hold the ensuing kickoff play in check and Corry had won this quarter-final defensive dog fight as they beat the Fort Leboeuf Bison 9-6.

Carey led Corry passing going 14 of 26 for 104 yards and threw one touchdown pass. Mason Savitz led Corry in receiving with four catches for 35 yards. Cook had three grabs for 29 yards and the lone touchdown. Lamech Albers led the ground game with 13 yards on seven carries.

Dominic Walters went one of five for five yards through the air as Fort LeBoeuf relied on the ground game. Walters led the ground attack with 94 yards on 12 attempts and he did have one fumble. Blose also had 82 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown.

Corry will Prepare for an even tougher opponent as they will travel to Meadville to take on the Hickory Hornets in the PIAA D-10 semifinals. The game is scheduled for Friday November 8th at 7:00 PM. Hickory is coming in with a week off as Slippery Rock had to Forfeit. We encourage everyone that is able to purchase a ticket and head to Meadville to support our Corry Beavers.

For those who can’t make it to the game in person, DeeJ Experience has already been approved by the PIAA to live stream the game. Once again, the Corry Gridiron club will be supporting our cause to bring the game to Beaver Nation all over the country. Please support the Corry Gridiron club and even consider joining them!
