CORRY, Pa.- Corry softball hosted the Union City Bears in cold but otherwise favorable evening of softball at the Lou Hanna Athletic Complex on Monday. The Bears used a fast start and a balanced offensive attack to jump out early but had to hold off a roaring comeback from Corry and escaped with 9-7 victory over the Beavers in the route six rivalry matchup.
Union City scored three times in the opening inning and added to its lead with a six-run stretch in the middle frames, five of them coming in the fourth inning. It created enough separation to withstand a late push from the hosting Lady Beavers.
Chyenne Cummings led the Lady Bears at the plate with three hits an RBI and two Runs scored, while Alivia Zielinski added two hits and scored a pair. Kimmy Zielinski also contributed offensively as part of a lineup that produced consistent contact throughout the game.
Corry responded with scoring in multiple innings and cut into the deficit with a late rally, but could not complete the comeback. Jazlyn Bridgham paced the lady Beavers with three hits and scored two runs. Rachel Moats added two hits including a monstrous home run (her first ever) over the left centerfield fence. Ayvah Taylor had two hits and scored twice, and Mahra Goodwill added a hit.
“We had a tough start tonight,” Corry head coach Allison Williams said. “We were making solid contact at the plate but just couldn’t find the gaps early on.”
Abby Capela earned the win for Union City, allowing two runs over 4 and one third innings. She gave up five runs on four hits, three of them were earned. She recorded two strikeouts and gave up three walks and a homerun. K. Zielinski worked in relief to help secure the victory. Zielinski gave up two runs on four hits, one of them was earned. She recorded one strikeout and no walks.
Braylyn Gerdy took the loss for Corry after surrendering nine runs on 12 hits in three innings. Eight of those runs were earned. She had one strikeout and one walk on the day. Maci Kemp provided effective relief. In four innings the relief hurler allowed just two hits and no runs were scored. Kemp had one strikeout and no walks on the day.
“I’m really proud of how the girls never gave up,” Head coach Allison Williams said. “Battling back from an eight-run deficit to finish within two runs really shows their resilience and mental toughness.”
With the loss, the lady Beavers fall to 3-2 on the young season and currently sit in the middle of region 4 at 1-1. The Bears improve to 2-2 on the year. The Beavers Game at Eisenhower was postponed to Monday April 13th, so their next action will be on the road Thursday as they head to North East to take on the Pickers. That game will be broadcasted live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream. www.deejexperience.com
