Corry, PA- The Corry Beavers football team hosted the Grape Pickers of North East in a Thursday night special at Howard Sheen Field. It was an important region five game and both teams had to win to keep pace with Fort LeBoeuf who had already beaten both teams earlier in the year.  The Beavers would prevail with an aerial assault the gave Corry the

win 34-16.

Corry kicked off the scoring in the first quarter. A huge 44-yard pass play from Jack Vanchieri to Blake Cook set up a four-yard touchdown pass From Vanchieri to Tucker Jackson. Keaton Frisina added the extra point and the Beavers lead 7-0.

North East answered in the second quarter as quarterback Bryson Galloway broke out to the near side and with great blocking down field, Galloway scampered 44 yards into the endzone. Jash Bannag added the PAT to tie the game at 7-7. Corry answered right back though. Vanchieri hit Cook on a quick slant over the middle and Cook turned on the afterburners for a 60-yard touchdown. Frisina added the PAT and Corry was back on top

14-7 at the half.

Corry would strike first coming out of the locker room in the third quarter as Vanchieri found Cook again on a slant route over the middle of the field. Cook scampered 35-yards into the endzone for the Corry touchdown. Landon Walizer connected added the PAT to make it a 21-7 lead for Corry.

North East would refuse to go quietly into the night though. Galloway would hit a big pass play of his own as he connected with Jayden Wittman for a 40-yard touchdown strike. Bannag added the extra point, and the Corry lead was cut to 21-14.

Corry would answer with the final score in the third quarter. Vanchieri found Connor Sterling down field at the 15-yard line and Sterling spun off a would-be tackler and stiff armed another Picker at the nine before getting into the endzone. The PAT was no good, but Corry extended their lead to 27-14.

The fourth quarter saw a punt pinning the Beavers back at their own two-yard line. That’s when the Pickers defense would tackle running back Deion Canady in the endzone for a Picker safety cutting the Corry lead to 27-16. Corry would get the final score of the game though. A 52-yard pass play from Vanchieri to Jackson would seal the Pickers fate for the night. Frisina added the extra point and the Beavers would win the game with a final score of 34-16.

North East had Corry’s rushing attack pinned down all night long. (-14 total yards on the ground).  It was the Beavers Passing game that shredded the North East Defense as Vanchieri went 25 out of 37 for 421 yards and throwing five touchdown passes. He did have two interceptions on the night. Blake Cook led all receivers with 12 receptions for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Sterling had five receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown; Jackson had two catches for 56 yards and two touchdowns, Frisina had five grabs and 54 yards, and Lamech Albers had one catch for 12 yards.

For the Pickers it was Galloway leading the ground game as he had 48 yards on eight carries and a touchdown. Carter Crozier had 31 yards on four carries, Ethen Ringer had 23 yards on 11 carries, and Colton Owens had four yards on two carries. Galloway was 13 of 24 through the air with 150 yards and a touchdown. Crozier had eight catches for 96 yards, Wittman had three catches for 46 yards and a touchdown, Owens had two catches for 10 yards, and Isaac McGuigan had one catch for six yards.

Both teams are now 5-2 on the year. Corry improves to 2-1 in region five and will host the Fairview Tigers at Howard Sheen Field on Friday October 10th at 7:00 PM. North East falls to 1-2 in the region and they will host the Girard Yellow Jackets in a Saturday Matinee game on October 11th with a 1:00 PM opening kickoff. Both games will be streamed live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream. www.deejexperience.com
