Corry JV started the season off well with a home opener victory over McDowell. McDowell has a tall and athletic team, but Corry serving and offense were too much for the Trojans to handle.
Both sets played out in nearly identical fashion with Corry and McDowell trading points early on in the sets and then Corry eventually outpacing McDowell in serving, and in offensive production. "Overall, I thought we played pretty well for our first match of the season. We executed the basics, making our serves, putting our hits in play, and stayed engaged as a team for the whole match. There were several very long rallies and Corry ended up winning those rallies by playing disciplined volleyball and keeping focused. Everyone on the team contributed to the win." Coach Brenner said.
Notable play included a hard hit ball by right side hitter, Katrena Downey, who has developed into a real hitting threat, a services run of eight straight by middle hitter Alivia Swan, and five kills on eight attempts by middle hitter Morgan VanderSchaaff.
Corry serving leaders were Swan (11 service points, two aces), setter Maci Kemp (eight service points, three aces), setter Naomi Brown (six service points, one ace) and defensive specialist Mikayla Comitz (two service points). Hitting leaders were VanderSchaaff (five kills), outside hitter Lauren Brundage (four kills), outside hitter Ava West three kills, and Downey (3 kills). Defensively, defensive specialist Delaney Church had five digs, while four others, Jordyn Watrous, Downey, Layla Bayer, and Swan had three digs apiece. Brown had nine assists and Kemp had seven.
The JV team hits the road to Clarion on Wednesday to take on the Bobcats. Opening serve is at 6:00PM with varsity action to follow. The game will be streamed live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream at www.deejexperience.com
