Corry Volleyball Coach
Erie, PA- In an unusual situation, MEG Goodsel took over the head coaching position for her first time as coach Kelly Goodsel was out of town on Thursday night. That did not stop the Beavers from doing Beaver things as Corry volleyball moved to 6-0 in region four and 10-0 overall with a quick sweep of the Mercyhurst Prep Lakers 25-18, 25-8, and 25-10.
Corry and Mercyhurst Prep played to a 17-17 tie in the first set, primarily on Corry mistakes, name the mistake and Corry committed them; service receive passing errors, hitting errors, and service errors. Finally, Corry got focused and pulled out the victory with an 8-1 run to win 25-18, middle hitter Rylee Nickerson and outside hitter Regan Kemp both had two kills down the stretch. Nickerson led the Corry team with five kills in the first set and had zero errors.
The second set Corry minimized the errors, with only one hitting error, and dominated the set two. Juniors led the offense with 11 kills (5, 3, 3) by Grace Allen, Regan Kemp, and Kendall Donoghue.
The third set Corry continued to dominate winning 25-10, getting plenty of experience for younger players. Sophomores included Naomi Brown had three service aces; sophomore Katrena Downey had two kills, and Morgan VanderSchaaff had a block. The freshmen contributing included Alivia Swan had a kill, and Maci Kemp had two assists, with one assist to her sister Regan. Freshmen
Jordyn Watrous and Mikayla Comitz both had a dig to round out the set.
“Our middles had the best match of the season, juniors Rylee Nickerson and Kendall Donoghuel had 8 and 6 kills respectively, and freshmen Alivia Swan had a kill. A typical measure for offensive production is hitting percentage (kills minus errors divided by hitting attempts); our middles had 15 kills, 1 error, on 21 attempts or a .666 hitting percentage. Successful middles is a result of great setting by Haley Mumau and Ava Hallberg who combined for 32 assists.” Stated coach MEG Goodsel.
“Defensively, seniors Sydney Mineo and Brynley Watrous started the match but, Ali Yetzer played well in the back row for Grace Allen throughout the evening, and Ellie Carey had two long serving runs and played great as libero in the third set” noted MEG.
