Corry, PA- Corry volleyball Charity Night was a huge success. Yes, Corry swept the Girard Yellow Jackets 25-8, 25-12 25-12, but more importantly, the team and the Corry community raised over $6,000 and collected over 1,500 pounds of pet food for Avery’s Pawsitive Change!
In addition to the money raised, DeeJ Experience added an extra $2000.00 through their Pack for Paws Efforts thanks to support from local businesses who helped by advertising on the webpage link. "I am beyond ecstatic that we were able to help with this kind of level of funding. I would challenge any community on the planet to step up to the plate like Corry does when it comes to supporting their own. You would be hard pressed to find any. Corry is one of a kind." Scott Lockwood said.
On a night where the 10-0 Corry volleyball team faced a 1-10 Girard team, the volleyball game was secondary to bringing the Corry community together to help raise money and collect pet food for Avery’s Pawsitive Change organization. In addition to representatives from Avery’s non-profit, the Anna Shelter and Erie County Human Society attended the event.
As for volleyball, Corry jumped out to an early 9-3 lead on kills by juniors Grace Allen, Rylee Nickerson, and Regan Kemp. Out of the timeout, Grace Allen served two consecutive aces and Corry expanded the lead to 18-7 before Girard took their second timeout. Senior Brynley Watrous had three service aces during the run. Sophomore Naomi Brown got her first varsity start and got a kill off an assist by fellow setter, senior Ava Hallberg. Senior Sydney Mineo closed out the game 25-8 with a service ace.
Girard came out with three good plays and took an early 4-3 lead before Nickerson and Allen had kills and Corry was up 9-4. Juniors Kendall Donoghue and Grace Allen had a block that sparked a scoring run with Ellie Carey serving who collected two service aces, along with kills by Nickerson and Kemp. Corry was never threatened and closed out the second set 25-12.
The third set Corry jumped out to a 4-0 lead on two kills by Donoghue and one by Allen. Corry led to 14-9 when the Kemp sisters connected, freshman Maci Kemp set her sister, junior Regan who put it to the floor for the first sister-sister kill of the season. Rylee Nickerson and Ali Yetzer both had two service aces in the third set.
“It was a very productive night, our seniors organized a very nice charity night and the community raised a bunch of resources (food and cash) for Avery’s Pawsitive Change. The team played clean for the most part and we were able to get a lot of playing time for lots of players” said coach Goodsel.
Corry is now 11-0 overall and 7-0 in Region 4 action. This is the Beaver's tenth 3-0 sweep on the season, their seventh straight sweep since the 3-2 barn burner at Maplewood back on September 9th. Corry volleyball will travel to North East on Thursday, October 9th and play for the Region championship.

JV Report By Mark Brenner
Corry JV Coach
Corry JV, down two outside hitters due to injury, worked hard to execute a ball control game plan and beat a scrappy and persistent Girard team in three sets 25-28, 21-25, and 15-11
The Corry game plan was to serve tough, pass well enough to run our offense, keep our out-of-system hits in the court, and score on in-system offense, especially with our middle hitters.
In the first set, the game plan was executed fairly well, with the exception of five Corry hitting errors. Outside hitter Jordyn Watrous served 10 times and scored four aces. Middle hitters Morgan VanderSchaaff and Liv Swan together had 5 kills and no errors. There were points where the ball went over the net six to seven times before a team would score. That showed both teams could be patient and control the ball.
In Set two, Corry struggled to keep out of system hits in play with eight hitting errors. Those hitting errors combined with two service errors and an out of rotation error, proved too much to overcome. Girard went on to win the set.
In the third set, Corry passing was much improved. Corry made all 15 of their serves, and the hitting and defense was good enough to clinch the win.
"It is good for us to play a ball control type game like this one with Girard. When our tall outside hitters are not hurt and are playing, we have a different kind of team that relies on them for killing the ball, both in-system and out-of-system. Without them we have to pass the ball better to run our middles, and minimize our unforced errors to be competitive." JV coach Mark Brenner stated.
VanderSchaaff and Swan were set 36 times and had a combined 14 kills, the most they have totaled in a match to date. Watrous also had 23 swings with two kills as an outside hitter, and all of the swings were in the court, no hitting errors.
Corry serving leaders were Watrous (10 service points, 4 aces), Outside hitter Naomi Brown (7 service points, 2 aces), setter Maci Kemp (6 service points, 2 aces) and defensive specialist Delaney Church (6 service points). Corry hitters were led by VanderSchaaff (8 kills), Swan (6 kills), and Brown (5 kills). Defensively, the team totaled 51 digs, Watrous had 13 digs, Libero Mikayla Comitz had 11 digs, and Church had 8 digs. Kemp led the team with 22 assists. The JV team improves to 9-1 on the year.
JV opening serve at North East on Thursday is scheduled for 6:00pm with Varsity action to follow with the region championship on the line. The match will be streamed live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream. www.deejexperience.com
