Erie, PA - In a match that felt a lot closer than the scores indicated, the Corry volleyball team swept the Iroquois Braves on Tuesday. It was the first region four match of the year for the Beavers as they took down the scrappy Braves 25-18, 25-11, and 25-15
The first set started off the best way possible for the Iroquois team who took the first four points on three strong serves and a Corry hitting error. Corry responded with 6 points of their own on serving by Regan Kemp and two kills by junior middle hitter Kendall Donoghue stretching the lead to 12-8. Iroquois tied the game up at 17-17 when Corry finally buckled down and scored eight of the last nine points to take the first set 25-18. The final three points were all Corry kills, first by setter Haley Mumau, then middle hitter Rylee Nickerson, and the final point by outside hitter Grace Allen.
The second set was a much more dominant showing by Corry, amassing a 20-3 lead at one point. Senior setter Ava Hallberg collected four assists leading the team to a 10-2 lead at the first Iroquois timeout. Junior defensive specialist Alison Yetzer had consecutive service aces along with four digs in the middle of the second set. Ava Hallberg had the last assist of the game, setting her fellow setter Haley Mumau for the final kill.
The third set was very competitive and similar to the first, with Corry holding a slim lead at 14-12 before the lady beavers finally took control of the game, going on an 11-2 run to close out the set and match. Down the stretch, sophomore Lauren Brundage and freshmen Ava West both had kills to extend the lead.
“Iroquois is an improving program with many of their players playing club during the off-season,and has had consistent coaching through the JV and varsity levels for four or five years. They served hard and we didn’t respond well, giving up eight points on serving alone” said coach Goodsel.
Kendall Donoghue had a career-high 400 hitting percentage and had several key plays at the net early in the match when it was still in question. Ava Hallberg had a career-high 9 assists and two digs in two sets of action. Senior Brynley Watrous and junior Regan Kemp both had 10 plus digs on defense.
Corry remains undefeated on the year at 5-0 and are now 1-0 in region four. The Beavers remain Ranked number one in the state as the move on to the match that everyone has circled on the calendar. Corry will play at Cathedral Prep on Thursday as the Beavers and Ramblers collide for the first time this year in what should be another great match. The JV opening serve is scheduled for 6:00 PM with varsity action to follow.
