Corry Volleyball JV Coach
Corry JV hosted the Maplewood Tigers in their first home match of the 2024 season. Maplewood has a great volleyball program that puts a competitive team on the court year after year. This year is no exception. The Beavers were able to pull off the Sweep in two straight sets though 25-21 and 25-23.
The match started with the first point being the longest rally of the whole night. The ball traveled over the net many times as both teams attacked and then defended repeatedly for nearly a minute and twenty seconds until eventually Corry won the point. That first point was a microcosm of the match. Two good teams battling it out, and Corry prevailing!
Sets 1 and 2 played out in similar fashion, both teams serving tough, passing fairly well, attacking the ball, and playing decent defense. The lead changed almost as often as the servers of both teams rotated through the line up. In the first set, middle hitter Rylee Nickerson stepped to the serving line with Maplewood leading 17-15. Nickerson served 6 straight times including an ace to give Corry the lead, 21-17. With this cushion, Corry pressed forward and finished off set 1. In the second set, Nickerson added another ace, libero Ellie Carey added 3 service points, OH Regan Kemp added 3 service points, and OH Lauren Brundage closed out the match with a hard hit ball down the line for a kill!
Statistically, Corry and Maplewood were pretty close in most categories. Maplewood edged out Corry in the passing department, but Corry had more kills 26-18. Those eight extra Corry kills almost equaled the total number of points that Corry won by. There are a lot of offensive weapons on this Corry team, but Kemp and Brundage make a very tough pair of hitters on the outside. They combined for 15 of the 26 kills and they are getting stronger every day.
Other notable contributions include Nickerson with 4 kills, MH Kendall Donoghue 3 kills, and RH, Naomi Brown 2 kills. Corry defenders had 43 digs led by libero Ali Yetzer and Kemp with 11 digs each. Setters Haley Mumau and Ava Hallberg had 13 and 11 assists respectively. Nickerson led all servers with 11 service points and 2 aces.
This was a very good win against a quality team and the coaching staff is proud of the effort and hard work on the court.
The JV team improves to 1-1 on the year and will travel to Cochranton on Thursday night to battle the Cardinals. Catch all the action live on www.deejexperice.com with JV at 6:00 pm and varsity action to follow.
