Lady Beavers Sweep Braves 3-0

Blog Report By Kelly Goodsell

Corry Beavers Volleyball

After three straight tough games for Corry volleyball out of the gate, the Beavers took care of an undersized and young, but improving Iroquois program, sweeping the Braves in three straight sets on Tuesday night in the Beaver Dam 25-5,25-20, and 25-10.

The first set was pure domination by the Corry team.   The second set saw the Iroquois braves put the ball in the court and for much of the game, Corry simply gave the braves points by making unforced errors.  The third set, Corry restored order to the match and dominated again.

Corry jumped out to a 7-0 lead on kills by Halle Albers, Aubrey Chase, two kills by Allison Sawyer, and a service ace by Albers. Corry cruised to an easy 25-5 first set victory with Iroquois only earning two points on kills.  One of the highlights of the first set was the play of juniors Baillee McCray (playing left back defense), Brynley Watrous (playing middle back defense), and Sydney Mineo who played right back  defense and served.

The second set was a not so funny “comedy of errors”.  Corry made 6 straight hitting errors and only one time did Iroquois have to return a ball, before we hit that one out.   With Corry trailing 13-6 coach Goodsel called his first time out.   “I pointed out to the team that of the 13 points Iroquois has on the scoreboard, they have only earned 2 points… we gave them all the rest with hitting, serving, or returning the ball”.  Sadye Dyne, Emmalee Carr, Aubrey Chase, and Halle Albers all had kills along with a service ace by Payton McCray and Corry closed the gap to only a 3-point deficit 16-13.  The Beavers tied the sore at 18-18 on three kills by Sophomore Grace Allen and another kill by middle hitter Sadye Dyne.  Sophomore setter Haley Mumau sandwiched a couple of Emmalee Carr kills around a setter dump to stretch the lead to 23-20 and then two Halle Albers kills from the outside closed on the second set.

The third set was very similar to the first set, where Corry dominated.  At 16-4, Iroquois had already used both timeouts and really had no answer.   A couple of third set highlights included kills by sophomores Rylee Nickerson and Regan Kemp, first varsity experience for sophomore Ali Yetzer, and some significant playing time for freshman Lauren Brundage.

Corry had a 341 hitting percentage (kills minus errors divided by attempts), which is a huge accomplishment.  The hitting could only be accomplished because of the passing by Seniors Makenna Moore, Sydney Woods, and Halle Albers, in addition to the three juniors mentioned earlier (McCray, Mineo, Watrous).   We only had one serve receive error in the match.

“I am proud of how we played in sets 1 and 3, especially given the fact that we played 17 different players.  The second set serves a purpose, to keep us humble, to know we have more improvement needed.   A couple of standout performances, obviously Grace Allen was fantastic collecting 12 kills, with a 524 hitting percentage; but our right sides were nearly as good. Emmalee Carr and Allison Sawyer had 13 kills on a 454 hitting percentage; lastly, Sydney Woods played great – no serve receive errors, 5 service aces, and 5 digs.” Noted coach Kelly Goodsel.

The Beavers improve their overall record to 3-1 on the year and even more exciting news, they have found themselves a top of the PVCA rankings at number one in the state. Corry will also find themselves right back in the Beavers Dam on Wednesday night with a big Region 4 match against the Cathedral Prep Ramblers. JV Opening server is at 6:00 PM with Varsity action to follow. If you can't make it out to the match, watch it live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream. www.deejexperience.com
